Betfred's roots go back to 1967, when two brothers used the proceeds from backing England to win the World Cup a year earlier to open a single betting shop in Salford.

Still family-owned more than 50 years on, Betfred has grown into one of the largest independent operators in the UK, with a huge customer base both on the high street and online.

This bookmaker covers a large number of sports, from football and horse racing through to darts, snooker and US sports.

You'll also find in-play betting, price boosts and bet builder offerings all sitting under the same roof.

Let's walk through what I learned about Betfred from my extensive testing.

Betfred Pros & Cons

Pros

  • ✔️ Long-Established Bookmaker
  • ✔️ Generous Welcome Bonus
  • ✔️ Racing Post Data
  • ✔️ Acca Flex Insurance
  • ✔️ Best Odds Guaranteed

Cons

  • ❌ Welcome Bonus Restrictions
  • ❌ Limited Bet Builder Coverage
  • ❌ No VIP Program

Who Are They?

Betfred is operated by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, they are a family-owned business tracing its roots back to Salford in the 1960s.

Their site is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) - licence no. 39544.

Betfred Bonus

New Betfred customers can get £50 in free bets when they deposit £10 and bet £10.

Betfred Promo Code

No promo code is needed as this offer is available directly through registration on the official site.

Betfred New Player Terms and Conditions

  • Deposit and stake £10 or more on any sports market
  • Only a deposit from a debit card, or a debit card linked to Apple Pay or Instant Banking will qualify
  • Deposits from e-wallets and prepaid cards are excluded
  • The qualifying bet must be at odds of Evens (2.0) or greater
  • The qualifying bet must be settled within seven days of registering
  • Free bets are credited as three £10 single bets and two £10 acca bets
  • These free bets expire seven days after being issued
  • Virtuals, Totepool or combination forecast bet types are not eligible for free bets use
  • Bets settled via Cash Out will not count towards the offer

Is the Betfred Bonus Worth It?

At £50, the offer sits comfortably among the more generous free bets welcome bonuses on the UK market.

Splitting the free bets between straight markets and multi-leg accumulators gives new customers a feel for both betting styles without needing an unusual bet to qualify.

Key Benefits:

✔️ Two Free Bet Types - Three tokens for any sports market plus two reserved for accumulators, covering different betting styles

✔️ Fast Crediting - Free bets land within 24 hours of the qualifying bet settling

Who is This Bonus Best For?

✔️ This offer suits new customers who like both straight bets and multi-leg accumulators without a big outlay

Regular Rewards

Existing Betfred customers get a steady run of sport-specific promotions rather than a single loyalty ladder, which makes it ones of the most attractive offerings available on UK betting sites.

  • Acca Flex - Boosts winnings on accumulators of five or more legs, scaling up to 100% on a 20-leg acca, or refunds your stake in cash (up to £10) if just one leg loses
  • Double Delight & Hat-Trick Heaven - Enhanced odds if your first goalscorer (or, in Super League rugby, first tryscorer) selection scores a second
  • Turbo Boost - A single heavily boosted market refreshed regularly across football, golf, cricket and horse racing
  • Rewards4Racing - Racing and greyhound bettors earn one point per £1 staked (up to 2,000 points every four weeks), redeemable for tickets and hospitality at 40+ UK and Irish racecourses

Betfred doesn't run a tiered VIP program for its sportsbook, but Rewards4Racing gives regular racing bettors a genuine points-based alternative.

Betfred Payment & Withdrawal Options

Getting money in and out of Betfred is fairly standard for a UK bookmaker.

Deposits can be made by Debit Card (Visa or Mastercard), Apple Pay or Instant Banking. Meanwhile, credit cards aren't accepted for UK mainland customers, only those in Gibraltar, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Withdrawals are usually processed within 4 hours for card payments, 6 hours for Apple Pay or Instant Banking, and up to 3 days for bank transfer (BACS)

Know Your Customer (KYC) Process

Verification is required upfront for UK and Northern Ireland customers and you won't be able to deposit or place a bet until your age and identity are confirmed.

Customers outside GB/NI get up to 72 hours to deposit and play before verification is needed, although winnings can't be withdrawn until it's complete.

Most accounts are verified electronically at registration. Where that fails, you'll be asked to upload a photo ID (passport or photocard driving licence) plus a proof of address dated within the last three months.

Betfred Site Features

Betfred blends old-school bookmaking heritage with a handful of tools that give it a genuine edge for regular bettors.

Bet Builder & Multi-Match Bet Builder

Combine selections such as goals, goalscorers, corners and cards into a single football bet, then take it further by combining Bet Builders across multiple matches at once.

Player-based selections also come with Sub Switch, which automatically rolls your pick onto the next player if your original selection is substituted mid-match - a safety net most Bet Builder tools don't offer.

Racing Post Spotlight

Racing and greyhound customers get Racing Post data across the sports offering.

This is a genuine point of difference for horse racing bettors, who don't always get this depth of form data bundled in for free.

Best Odds Guaranteed & Extra Places

Best Odds Guaranteed applies to any UK or Irish race from 8am on race day, paying out at the bigger Starting Price if it drifts above the odds you backed.

Extra Places and Super Extra Places add an additional each-way finishing position on selected races, at 1/5 odds.

Lucky 15/31/63 Bonuses

Betfred's founder claims to have invented the Lucky 15 bet type back in 1980, earning him the nickname "Bonus King" and the operator still leans into that heritage today.

A single winning selection on a Lucky 15, 31 or 63 pays out at 3x, 4x or 5x the odds respectively; get every selection correct instead (including on Yankee, Canadian and Heinz bets, and virtual racing) and Betfred adds a 10-25% cash bonus on the winnings, plus a 10% Winning Tricast Bonus on any successful tricast.

Acca Flex

Football accumulators of five or more legs at minimum odds of 1/2 can earn a cash bonus scaling from 5% at five legs up to 100% at 20, capped at £35,000 per bonus.

If just one leg lets you down, you still get your stake back in cash, up to £10.

Watch Live Sport

UK and US horse racing streams free with any balance in your account, while other races and greyhound meetings (excluding Perry Barr, Pelaw Grange and Swindon, which are free) unlock with a £1+ bet.

The stream runs up to 30 seconds behind the actual action, so it's worth keeping that in mind if you're following in-play markets closely.

Betfred Mobile App

The Betfred mobile app is available for both iOS and Android and carries the same sportsbook betting markets, promotions and account features as the desktop site.

  • App Store: 4.6* (66,000+ reviews)
  • Google Play Store: 4.5* (15,000+ reviews)

The iOS version of the Betfred in particular ranks among the higher-rated betting apps in the UK, with players regularly praising its stability during in-play events.

However, a share of Android reviews mention having to log back in more often than they'd like.

Customer Support

Live chat is available through Betfred's FredBot assistant, which handles common questions before passing more complex ones on to a human agent.

Meanwhile, phone support runs from 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 8pm on Sundays. Email support is also available for less urgent queries.

Responsible Gambling

Betfred lets customers set deposit limits over 24-hour, seven-day or 30-day periods.

Elsewhere, decreases apply immediately, while increases are reviewed within 24 hours. Reality checks and time-outs (24 hours to six weeks) cover shorter breaks, while self-exclusion runs from six months to 5 years.

A two-minute Safer Gambling Self-Assessment helps customers judge their own risk, and Betfred also runs internal Global Limits that automatically pause deposits based on rolling 30-day activity.

Things to Note

A few points worth weighing up before signing up to Betfred.

Welcome Bonus Restrictions

Only debit card, Apple Pay or Instant Banking deposits qualify for the welcome offer - e-wallets and prepaid cards don't count.

Limited Bet Builder Coverage

It's a bit of a shame that Bet Builder markets aren't available across every sport, including some US leagues.

No VIP Program

While Rewards4Racing offers a point-based rewards system, Betfred does not currently offer a tiered VIP program for sports bettors.

Is Betfred the Right Choice for Me?

Betfred brings genuine weight to the table, built for decades as one of the UK's best-known bookmakers rather than a newer digital-only brand.

The £50 welcome offer is competitive, splitting free bets between straight sports markets and accumulators so new customers get a feel for both right away.

Betfred's markets and betting products are the real draw here. Acca Flex gives accumulator bettors a genuine safety net on larger multiples, Sub Switch adds real protection to Bet Builder wagers and the Racing Post data hub is a strong pull for racing fans

These promotions are ran alongside signature offers like Double Delight Hat-Trick Heaven and the Lucky 15/31/63 bonuses.

There are some downsides too, such as no dedicated VIP scheme for sportsbook customers and the app can be a little insistent about logging you out.

Neither issue is a dealbreaker against everything else on offer and I would recommend Betfred highly, particularly to horse racing fans and accumulator bettors.

Love Betfred for Cheltenham and the Grand National. They had good place terms and I liked the racing offers. I got my withdrawals within a day via Revolut which was handy. Not the flashiest app, and definately not my go to app, I'm a Bet365 man through and through, but feel Betfred does it better for the big racing meets in the UK, 100%.

I mostly enjoy using Betfred for my bets but there’s room for improvement. The site and app do what they need to but feel a bit dated compared to some newer betting platforms, it took me a while to find certain features like the bet builder because the menus aren’t as intuitive as they could be.

I’ve had a mixed experience with Betfred, loved the free bets at the start but then app froze once or twice when I was betting. So not for me. I'm out. Much better bookies out the in the UK that don't freeze as much. Aside from that not to bad, but not for me.

The odds could be better but I signed up for the free bet offer. Can't go wrong with a bet 10 get 50 offer and no mater catch or waging requirements like other sites.

I had an issue verifying my account and the live chat support sorted it out within minutes, it’s reassuring to know Betfred’s customer service is on the ball.

Pretty happy with their odds and the app is okay but the website interface could be cleaner and having to re-login is a bit annoying - still I keep using Betfred because the positives outweigh those minor issues.

Definitely the best odds on football in my opinion, cash out is reliable, and payouts hit my account fast.

Fred is very annoying, but there are some decent offers and they take a bet.

Betfred's promotions keep me coming back - the odds boosts on big football matches and the free bets add real value, plus their odds are generally as good as other bookies, and I’ve had a few nice wins thanks to those little extras.

A solid, easy-to-use app with good sports offers, but no features that make it stand out from other sites.
