18:00 Leopardstown: Needle Match - 1pt Win @ 11/2
Needle Match was a selection in this column when disappointing in the 2000 Guineas, but I think he still has the potential to be a top-class prospect and he has the chance to bounce back and show that today.
He ran with plenty of promise in defeat in the Greenham when shaping as though he could be the best horse in the race, when making up ground to finish fourth having shown his inexperience at various stages.
He was beaten at the time, but the undulations at Newmarket extended the margin of defeat as he was clearly uncomfortable going into the dip and was eased after.
This will be Needle Match’s first time running around a bend but I think this track will at least be more suitable for him than Newmarket and the drop in class helps his cause too.
His physique suggested he was more of a long term prospect, so it might be that he’s been given time off since the Guineas to strengthen up.
While there’s a chance that he may need the run a little today after the break, I’m hopeful that he wouldn’t be sent to run in Ireland if he was so far short of fitness that he couldn’t show his true ability.
